Nothing is more important than our health. It’s what allows us to live our lives to the fullest; it’s something to cherish and never take for granted. That’s why it’s crucial to seek out the best of the best when you’re looking to improve your health through weight loss.
In this blog, we’ll explain what medical weight loss is, highlight Moxie Medispa’s research-driven approach to medical weight loss, and share the scientific studies that guide our services. We hope this blog can help you determine if medical weight loss is right for you.
What is Medical Weight Loss?
According to the Mayo Clinic, medical weight loss is a viable treatment option for people who are classified as clinically obese (having a Body Mass Index of 30 or higher) and haven’t been able to adequately lose weight through diet and exercise.
It’s important to remember that medical weight loss is a supplement – not a replacement – for a healthy diet and exercise. Your prescription, diet, and exercise should all work hand in hand. Long-term use of prescription weight loss drugs (more than 12 weeks) leads to major weight loss, especially when patients also adopt a healthier lifestyle. In fact, the Mayo Clinic posits that taking prescription weight loss medication for a year can lead to a loss of total body weight of 3% to 12% in conjunction with lifestyle changes (healthier diet and exercise). This amount of weight loss results in numerous health benefits, such as lower blood pressure, lower blood sugar levels, and lower levels of fats in the blood called triglycerides.

For medical weight loss patients, we offer Semaglutide as a treatment. Semaglutide works through a hormone system called GLP-1. It asks your pancreas to support better insulin production, decrease glucagon synthesis, delay gastric emptying time, and decrease overall food noise. To break it down even more simply, it supports better metabolic functioning, helps you feel satiated quicker, and curbs cravings. Results may vary, but noticeable changes typically occur in the second month of treatment.
What Does the Research Say?
We have seen great success in our prescription Semaglutide patients, and the research agrees. In a 2023 study published in The New England Journal for Medicine, researchers conducted a multicenter, double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled, event-driven superiority trial on 17,604 patients. About half of the patients were given Semaglutide, and about half were given a placebo. Over the course of a trial period that lasted just over 34 months and a follow-up period of nearly 40 months, researchers found that Semaglutide was superior to placebo in reducing the incidence of death from cardiovascular causes, nonfatal myocardial infarction, or nonfatal stroke.
Furthermore, researchers at Penn University, Cedar Crosse Research Center, and York University studied the FDA trials of Semaglutide and published their findings in Taylor & Francis Online in early 2023. These trials were tested on 4,988 participants over a 68-week treatment period, followed by a 7-week off-treatment follow-up period. Similarly to the previous study, half of the patients were given Semaglutide, and half were given a placebo. Data from the program demonstrated that a prescription Semaglutide regime achieved significant and sustained weight loss, together with improvements in cardiometabolic risk factors compared with placebo, and was generally well tolerated, with a safety profile consistent with other GLP-1RAs.
